I Met You in Dream
A Love Poem
I drift through dreams, or so it feels,
tying knots to the masts of vast, unseen ships,
anchoring myself in the spaces between,
while the steady drum of my heart whispers,
reminds me of your voice on those icy mornings,
when Calgary’’s breath was sharp and the air bit hard.
We traced routes on maps,
steam rising from our mugs of tea,
the warmth of adventure bubbling between us.
We spoke of distant seas, of horizons yet to cross,
our dreams sailing wide,
while our dog wagged his tail,
a compass spinning circles around our world.
This is our first lap, you said,
and I believed you,
your arms my harbor,
our rhythm matching the swoop of seagulls,
their cries like secrets carried on the wind.
I am a mermaid out of water,
swimming through a melody I can’t quite catch,
out of tune, out of time,
waiting for the moment when clarity arrives,
when dolphins leap and the sea cheers,
and I wake from this dream,
still floating,
still yours.
